My Teammate for Life

Over my years in baseball, I’ve had some great teammates. One really stands out, and that’s because she is my wife. We were married on June 26, 1956— almost 70 years ago. She’s been my teammate for life. I think back to all the homes we rented in Ridgeway, NJ during my time playing for the Yankees, and the wonderful days of spring training in Florida.

As our children grew up and were old enough to go to the games, she would bring them along. When my playing days were over and we returned to Sumter, I became a baseball coach, and she remained a great teammate through all of those years.

Now, in the golden years, surrounded by so many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she continues to be my steadfast partner. She really loves the Lord, and I want her to share just a few things with you.

Just Take Him at His Word

When I think about my song, it describes my own journey of faith—one that I hope encourages you too. I began in a place of doubt, searching desperately for something I could feel, some assurance that I was truly saved. In those moments of fear and uncertainty, Jesus met me with His Word, steady and sure. I can still remember the joy that filled my heart when I finally understood He had saved me through His precious blood at Calvary. That peace was a gift of grace I could not earn on my own.

Even now, when life brings struggles or my heart feels weak, I come back to His promises. I simply tell myself, “I’ll just take Him at His word.” Every promise He makes is true, and when I choose to trust Him, He carries me through every storm. There are tears sometimes, and people may fail me, but Jesus never does. He knows the way through every trial, and leaning on Him has taught me how to rest in His strength.

If you are facing doubts or hardships, I hope my song reminds you that faith does not depend on fleeting feelings. His Word is enough. Take Him at His Word, and He will see you through.
